During Future Hotello, which took place at the RAI Amsterdam, Jorn Heikens, student at Stenden Hotel Management School, won the Talent of the Year Award 2018. This prestigious award is annually handed to a Young Talent, who has performed exceptionally well during or shortly after his studies.
Jorn Heikens (HHL’19) left more than 45 nominated talents behind him. The Talent of the Year Award is an election for high potentials who are studying at one of the Dutch Hotel Management Schools, or have graduated no more that two years ago. These Young Professionals are already recognized as true Hotello’s, with the accompanying values: hospitable, energetic, socially skilled, inventive and ambitious. Next tot hat, the Young Professional has delivered admirable work in 2017, or has done something special (at school, in the work field, completed an impressive research, or took part in extracurricular activities). This year a selection committe brought the number of nominees back to a TOP 10. Consequently, a Panel of Experts elected the TOP 3 after intense deliberation. These three finalists started an online campaign and together they rallied more that 1800 votes. Jorn (HHL’19) won and defeated Michael W. Kerr (HHL’19) and Robin van der Zwaard (TIO’17) with the online campaign (35% of the total votes) and the scores of the Panel (65% of the total score).
Jorn Heikens was nominated not one, but two times. Teachers of Stenden Hotel Management School describe Jorn as “Mister Hospitality” and a role model for other students. He is committed to his study and his fellow students, and is a helping hand during the Open House days at Stenden. Next to that, he organises his own events, among which the Cultural Music Festival. The upcoming year Jorn is going to broaden his horizon with two projects in a foreign country. Jorn, congratulations!
HotelloTOP Year Event
The Talent of the Year Award was awarded during Future Hotello, an event for students and recent graduates of the Dutch Hotel Management Schools, during which a connection was made between students and companies from the hospitality industry. Future Hotello is an initiative of HotelloTOP, the networking platform for alumni of the Duth Hotel Management Schools, in collaboration with the student associations: Io Vivat, Xenia, Amphitryon, La Confrérie and Comitas. Future Hotello was followed by the HotelloTOP Year Event and the HotelloTOP networking drink, which the students were also able to attend.
This year’s HotelloTOP Year Event was themed ‘To Infinity and Beyond’, inspired by the credo of youth hero Buzz Lightyear. The congress started off with three TOP Talks, followed by some results of the HotelloTOP Happiness Barometer research, after which the Hotello of the Year Award was handed to the winner: Sam Holtus (HTH’11). Finally, Keynote speaker Chris Zegers glanced with us into the future. In the evening the HotelloTOP networking drink took place, where The Recipe closed the day with a bang.
