The NXT GM Challenge

The NXT GM Challenge is a competition in which recent graduates or final-year students from Dutch Hotel Management Schools compete for their dream job; General Manager of four-star location Postillion Hotel Amersfoort Veluwmeer. During the Challenge Day on Friday, October 25 and Saturday, October 26, 2019, the top 3 were compiled by means of an assignment. The 10 candidates have been tested on finance, insight, creativity and entrepreneurship, among other things. The next day, the participants had to give a pitch to the professional jury about their vision regarding the assignment. The candidates also followed a leadership training course by MapsTell, given by Richard Haeck (Q-Staff). This gave them a better understanding of behavioural styles and how to deal with various personalities. Ultimately, 3 worthy finalists emerged; Rico Borst (SHMS “19), Michelle Slinkman (SHMS” 20), and winner Melissa van Rooij (Tio “19). This was an informed decision by an independent jury consisting of Toine Geerens (chairman of the jury), Kim van Velzen (Strategist, KIMspiration), Anouk Dekkers (in a personal capacity), Mascha van Houten (Corporate Recruiter, Cooperative VGZ / Court of Gelderland), Sebastiaan Schaafsma (General Manager, Max Brown Amsterdam) and Diederick Joosten (Panta Holdings BV) and the online votes of the audience. Now Melissa can fulfil her dream and gain a year of experience as General Manager. Melissa will be fully responsible for running the hotel. This means financially, but also operationally and commercially.

The winner of The NXT GM Challenge was announced during the HotelloTOP Year Event. The HotelloTOP Year Event this year was dedicated to ‘Made in Holland’: Tulips, Cheese and Hotello’s. Several speakers spoke during this congress, including Ilja Gort and the annual Hotello of the Year Award was presented. Then the well-known networking drink took place where the ‘The Recipe’ ended the day in a festive way.
