TIO University of Applied Sciences wins EMCup 2016 in Maastricht

Yesterday, the eighth edition of the European Mise en Place Cup (EMCup) took place. A whopping amount of 30 international hotel management schools from 14 different countries competed for this prestigious prize during the competitions days in Maastricht. This edition of the EMCup was devoted to the theme “Surfing The Silver Wave”. This year, Tio University of Applied Sciences (The Netherlands) was awarded with the first prize, followed by Shannon College of Hotel Management (Ireland) and Glion Institute of Higher Education (Switzerland).

30 leading hotel management schools from 14 European countries took part in this eighth edition of the EMCup. A team of a maximum of five students represented each school, guided by a dean or coach. During the competition, these students were asked to present their vision with regard to a relevant theme. This year, that theme was ‘Surfing The Silver Wave’, where they had to seek out opportunities for the hospitality industry to anticipate on the ageing population. Before the competition days, the teams wrote a paper about the topic, made an introduction movie and were challenged to create as much ‘rumour around the brand’ as possible. It’s not what you know but who you know that makes the difference. During the two competition days, they were asked to work on a case and present the results to the jury members. The teams were judged by a professional jury of about 40 persons, consisting of representatives of the international hospitality industry. The competition took place at Hotel Management School Maastricht and MECC Maastricht. Apart from the competitive programme, moderated by training company Q-staff, the participants were inspired by speeches from trend watcher Herman Konings, Conrad Lashley (Stenden University of Applied Sciences) and Bram Klaeijsen (President, Cargill Asia Pacific). Via personal mapping tool ‘MapsTell’, the students gained insight about their behavioural style.

The EMCup is an initiative  HotelloTOP, a networking platform for students & alumni of the international hotel management schools, and co-creator Mise en Place.
